New televised lottery on our screens, but the true 'Health Lottery' is the NHS

Published on 27/09/2011

A new televised lottery will soon be launched in the UK with the aim of tackling health inequalities, but millions of Brits are already taking part in their own lottery- the NHS postcode lottery.

New programme The Health Lottery, run by media tycoon Richard Desmond, will offer a £100,000 top prize for matching five numbers, £500 for four numbers, and £50 for three.

Of every £1 ticket, 20.34p will be donated to charitable causes such as respite care for young carers, and funding specialist nurses for sufferers of Alzheimer’s disease.

But millions of Brits are already playing their own ‘health lottery’, by paying a large percentage of their income tax towards the NHS.

The NHS costs £30k earners around £1,350 a year in tax. This £1,350 ‘ticket’ guarantees healthcare in the UK. However, the NHS postcode lottery dictates the quality and speed of this free service.

There is a huge variation in NHS hospitals across the UK, and many are far below the Government recommended standard.

In 2010, the NHS Atlas of Variation recorded the staggering differences in service from NHS trusts. It showed, for instance, a 14-fold difference in spend on broken hips between best and worst areas.

Recent news also revealed that at least ten NHS primary care trusts out of 100 have artificially increased waiting times to save money.

The Health Lottery draw will be shown in adverts on Saturday evenings on ITV and Channel 5, but most people who buy a ticket will not benefit from their donated 20p.

Instead, buying a health insurance policy is a guaranteed way of ending your own health lottery. Private medical insurance will ensure prompt care at a private hospital of your choice, in a room with fantastic facilities. It could also cover the cost of drugs too expensive for use on the NHS.

Compare health insurance quotes now to avoid the NHS postcode lottery and gain peace of mind about your future health.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
