New sunbed restrictions introduced

Published on 01/12/2009
New regulations have come into force in Scotland today (December 1st) calling for an end to unstaffed tanning salons and use of sunbeds by under 18s.

The Public Health Act will also see salons display potential risks involved with exposure to harmful rays of UV light.

Sunbed use can be linked to greater risk of skin cancer, cataracts and accelerated skin damage.

Commenting on the move, Nina Goad, spokesperson for the British Association of Dermatologists (BAD), said: "Part of the problem is that some sunbed suppliers are misleading their customers by advertising somewhat spurious health benefits but not providing them with information about the health risks."

According to BAD, similar regulations are expected to be rolled out in other parts of the UK including Wales and Northern Ireland.

Recent figures from Cancer Research UK show that 90 per cent of people in the UK back proposals to stop under 18s from using sunbeds.
