New research sheds light on ME

Published on 08/09/2010
A treatment for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, better-known as ME, may be closer to being available as part of private medical cover following the results of new research.

Scientists at the University of Dundee have found that children with the condition show abnormalities in blood cells involved in inflammation, which are indicative of a possible viral infection.

The results of the study, published in the journal Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, support earlier studies conducted on adults and could help scientists to discover the cause of ME, which is currently unknown.

It turn, this could one day help provide a treatment for the illness.

Commenting on the study, Jane Colby, of the Young ME Sufferers Trust, said: "The medical profession must now take the consequences of ME in children seriously, and research into prevention and treatment must be given a high priority.

"Children with ME are too often treated with scepticism by the healthcare system, and even denied their right to suitable education and other support."

It is estimated that 250,000 people in Britain are affected by ME.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
