New prostate cancer drug radium-233 chloride successfully trialled

Published on 26/09/2011

Trials for a new prostate cancer drug have been stopped early because the huge success rate makes it ‘unethical’ not to offer the drug to everyone taking part.

Radium-233 chloride was being trialled on a group of 922 prostate cancer patients by doctors at the Royal Marsden Hospital, all suffering from secondary cancer of the bone.

Half of the group were given the drug alongside traditional chemotherapy, and half were given a placebo. The death rate was 30% lower in the group taking radium-223. Those patients survived for 14 months on average compared to 11 months in the placebo group.

The trial was abandoned as "it would have been unethical not to offer the active treatment to those taking placebo", said Dr Chris Parker, the lead researcher.

Radium-233 chloride is a powerful alpha radiation drug containing alpha particles. Alpha particles are much more damaging to cancer cells than beta particles.

The findings will be presented at the European Multidisciplinary Cancer Congress, but they have yet to be peer reviewed. Cancer Research UK said it was a very important and promising discovery.

This news comes after prostate cancer drug abiraterone was officially launched in the UK.

Patients with certain private medical cover will have access to approved drugs too expensive for the NHS. Compare private medical insurance policies online now to see whether you could be treated with abiraterone or radium-233 chloride in the future.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
