New multi cancer drug L-NNA to be trialled on humans

Published on 02/11/2011

Patients with private medical insurance may soon have access to a new multi-cancer drug, which is to be tested in a human trial.

The drug, called L-NNA, works by constricting the blood vessels to tumours- it acts on an enzyme called nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and starves them of blood. L-NNA could help to treat a variety of solid tumour cancers, such as bowel cancer, breast cancer or lung cancer.

Professor Peter Hoskin, from the centre, said: "All cancers rely on the delivery of vital nutrients and oxygen through blood vessels. Without a blood supply, a tumour can't grow beyond the size of a pin head.

"Scientists across the world are looking for ways to prevent cancer cells from receiving the supplies they depend on to grow and divide."

"It's very exciting to launch this trial of a new drug which in future may provide a new approach to treat a wide range of cancers."

Scientists at the Mount Vernon Cancer Centre in London are looking to recruit 40 patients for the Phase 1 trial. All the patients will have advanced solid tumours which will have spread throughout the body.

The trial will focus on safety rather than effectiveness, establishing the right dose of the drug and taking tissue samples to see what happens to L-NNA inside the body.

Other drugs have already been developed that prevent tumours from building their own networks of blood vessels, a process called angiogenesis.

The new trial will be funded and managed by the drug development office of Cancer Research UK. Dr Nigel Blackburn, director of drug development at the charity, called it a "promising area of research.”

Patients with private health insurance will have access to new licensed cancer drugs and treatments which might not be available for use on the NHS. Compare health insurance policies online now to make sure you are covered for L-NNA in the future.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.
