New combination breast cancer treatment may help increase longevity

Published on 15/12/2009
A new clinical study has discovered a potentially effective treatment for women diagnosed with an aggressive form breast cancer.

The work, conducted at Duke University Medical Center in the US, identified that a combination of the drugs lapatinib and trastuzumab resulted in a median survival of 14 months when used to treat patients suffering from ErbB2-positive.

Lead researcher Kimberley Blackwell said: "The agents may be acting together to form a sort of 'dual blockade' to obstruct the ErbB2 pathway necessary for the tumour to thrive.

"It's possible that the combination of agents is able to provide a more complete anti-tumour attack. To achieve a survival advantage of greater than one year for this aggressive form of breast cancer is very encouraging."

Breast cancer patients treated with only lapatinib experienced a median overall survival of just 9.5 months, the results revealed.

According to Cancer Research UK, breast cancer incidence rates have increased by more than 50 per cent over the last 25 years.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
