Nearly 20,000 patients wait longer than a year for NHS treatment

Published on 19/09/2011

Nearly 20,000 patients without private health insurance have been waiting for treatment on the NHS for more than a year, new figures show.

The Department of Health's figures from July also reveal that in total, 2.61million patients were still waiting for elective operations like hip and knee replacements.

In addition, 7,262 more patients were seen outside the 18 week target time in July compared to the same month last year.

The 40% rise reflects the struggle faced by the NHS to maintain levels of care whilst making £20billion of savings over the next 4 years.

Under the previous Government funding for the NHS was tripled, new hospitals were built, and waiting times were dramatically reduced. But since the new Government began reorganising the NHS waiting lists have started to rise again.

Critics say that hospitals are focusing too much on seeing patients within the 18 weeks target. Those who are missed are then left abandoned for an unacceptable number of months.

John Healey, Labour’s Shadow Health Secretary, said:

“Month after month David Cameron’s waiting times promise is coming face to face with the cold hard reality of his Government’s own statistics.

Patients with private health insurance will bypass these potentially long NHS queues and receive prompt treatment at a time convenient for them. Compare health insurance quotes now to get instant cover.
