Nearly 1,000 breast cancer deaths every year avoidable, says study

Published on 18/06/2010
Almost 1,000 deaths per year from breast cancer in England could be avoided with earlier diagnosis, a study has revealed.

According to researchers from University College London, a total of 957 deaths occur annually because women fail to notice the signs of breast cancer soon enough or do not attend regular screenings.

They compared breast cancer survival rates between patients in England, Norway and Sweden between 1996 and 2004.

In comparison to the two Scandinavian countries, an increased death rate in England "was particularly pronounced in the first month and in the first year after diagnosis, and generally more marked in the oldest age groups".

Professor Henrik Moller, lead author of the research, which was presented at the National Cancer Intelligence Network conference in Birmingham, said: ''This study has important implications for women in this country.

''We could prevent nearly a thousand deaths from breast cancer each year by getting the disease diagnosed earlier, particularly in older women."

It was recently announced that the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, the body responsible for deciding which treatments are available on the NHS, has rejected the breast cancer drug lapatinib, sparking outrage among patients.

Those looking for the best access to drugs for conditions such as breast cancer may wish to take out medical insurance.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
