National Health Service struggling to meet patient demand

Published on 04/12/2009
NHS dentistry is facing a major challenge coping with the consequences of the ageing population, according to British Dental Association scientific adviser Professor Damien Walmsley.

In an interview with the BBC, the expert warned that better oral care and dental hygiene is resulting in more people keeping their own teeth into old age.

Dr Phil Stemmer, of the Teeth for Life centre in west London, said that lack of government funding means that it is difficult for people to access dental treatment on the NHS.

He commented: "What needs to be done is that there should be enough dentists who are accessible to everybody from age one to age 100.

"A lot of people are replacing their old dentures and their old bridges with implants, which is a much more long-term solution, much more comfortable, and their chewing ability is much better and it looks better."

National dental statistics show that 54.2 per cent of the population (27.9 million) saw an NHS dentist in the 24-month period ending September 2009.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
