National dementia strategy established in Scotland

Published on 01/06/2010
A national dementia strategy has been launched in Scotland, mandating the country to improve the healthcare it provides to patients with Alzheimer's disease.

The framework will put in place national care standards and also ensure that the Scottish government continues to provide financial support for research into the neurological condition.

It is estimated that the number of people living in Scotland with Alzheimer's disease will double over the next quarter of a decade, reaching approximately 140,000 by 2035.

Currently, the illness costs health services in the region of £1.7 billion per year.

Speaking to the Herald newspaper, health minister Shona Robison said: "People leave the GP with this diagnosis and they can end up in limbo and only come back into the system when things have got worse."

The new strategy has been welcomed by charity Alzheimer Scotland, which believes that it will help reduce the difficulties faced by people suffering from dementia, as well as their families.
