National audit exposes gaps in lung cancer care

Published on 03/11/2009
Lung cancer experts have called for more to be done to raise awareness of the early symptoms of the disease and to ensure all patients receive equal access to specialist support and care.

Dr Jesme Fox, of the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, explained that there is a wide variation in the standard of service nationwide, meaning some patients aren't catching the signs early enough.

She said: "All patients should have access to best practice diagnostics, treatment and care. Raising the standard for all, to the best services, would dramatically improve outcomes.

"GPs need to have a lower threshold for referring patients with potential lung cancer on for investigation."

Ms Fox's comments follow the National Lung Cancer Audit, which revealed that almost half of cases in the UK are referred to a specialist from their general practitioner. However, others are submitted for care after emergency consultation.

According to the UK Lung Cancer Coalition, only 51 per cent of patients with the disease receive any kind of active treatment.

No.1 health insurance broker as rated by customers

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
