Maternal alcohol consumption linked to epilepsy risk

Published on 08/04/2010
Women who continue to drink alcohol during pregnancy could be increasing their baby's risk of developing epilepsy, according to a new study.

Research carried out by neuroscientists at Queen's University in Canada found that children who suffer from foetal alcohol spectrum disorder - a condition caused by maternal drinking during pregnancy - were six times more likely to suffer from epilepsy in later life.

Professor John Duncan, medical director at the National Society for Epilepsy, said: "It is well recognised that alcohol can damage the brain, and it is also well known that brain damage may lead to the development of epilepsy.

"[This] is a further reason for the pregnant mother to not take alcohol during pregnancy."

The National Society for Epilepsy estimates that one in 20 people will have a one-off epileptic seizure at some point in their life. Statistics show that 75 people in the UK are diagnosed with epilepsy every day.

The Department of Health recommends that pregnant women avoid alcohol entirely but if they do choose to drink, to limit intake to between one and two units per week.
