Loud music risks hearing damage

Published on 16/12/2009
The ANEC secretary-general Stephen Russell has called for limits on MP3 player volume settings to prevent hearing damage.

Speaking on BBC One's Politics Show, he suggested that the default maximum setting should be 85 decibels.

Dr Huw Cooper, spokesperson for the British Academy of Audiology, said: "There is sufficient evidence that prolonged use of personal music systems including MP3 players at high levels may be damaging to hearing and will cause permanent hearing loss.

"More needs to be done to educate people about the risk to hearing of noise exposure that can cause permanent hearing loss and tinnitus."

The European Commission recently published a memo proposing new safety standards for personal music players.

As a result of this mandate, exposure to high sound levels would be limited and users provided with adequate warnings and information regarding ear damage.

There are currently 470,000 adults in the UK with tinnitus that has a severe effect on their quality of life, according to the RNID.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
