Labiaplasty should be left to the private medical sector

Published on 24/08/2011

GPs should not refer women for labiaplasty on the NHS who are in good health but concerned about the appearance of their genitalia, experts say.

Specialists at a Central London hospital say they have received 30 unnecessary referrals from GPs over the past three years.

The British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology report that eight of these referrals were schoolgirls, one only 11 years old.

Lead investigator Dr Sarah Creighton said

“It's shocking, particularly because we are seeing girls who are really young.”

Dr Creighton said latest figures show about 2,000 of the procedures in England are paid for by the NHS each year.

"That's probably just the tip of the iceberg. It's a massive boom industry in the private sector” she said.

The study reviewed all 33 women referred to their clinic over the past 3 years with request for labial reduction. Only a fifth wanted the surgery to reduce discomfort. Most of the women wanted the procedure because they were concerned about appearance.

Twelve of the women who were refused procedure said they would consider going private to get the surgery if they could not get it on the NHS.

Paul Banwell, from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, said “If the concerns are aesthetic, that should probably be seen in the private sector”.

Indeed, the researchers from the University College London's Women's Health Institute say the procedure should be banned from the NHS and left to private practises.

The experts said: "A private medical insurance company seems to be able to come to a conclusion when professional bodies are reluctant to act.”

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.
