Junior doctors in the NHS feel unprepared for their role

Published on 02/11/2011

A new study from The General Medical Council (GMC) has revealed that junior doctors feel inadequately prepared for their role, and are dealing with problems “beyond their clinical experience”.

This could lead to more people taking out private medical insurance to guarantee treatment with a consultant of their choice.

The GMC’s annual poll, The National Training Survey 2011, was completed by 46,668 doctors in training. The survey discovered that although 79 per cent of junior doctors are happy with their training, there are still "concerns that need to be tackled urgently".

22.9 per cent of those questioned feel "forced to cope with problems beyond their clinical competence or experience". Of these, 11.1 per cent said this occurred on a monthly basis, 9.8 per cent on a weekly basis, and nearly 2 per cent on a daily basis.

Many trainees said they would benefit from improved supervision and feedback, with 28 per cent reporting that they rarely or never received feedback from senior colleagues.

The research also highlighted problems with working hours. Junior doctors are limited to working a 48 hour week, but almost two-third of trainee said they regularly worked more than this limit.

GMC chief executive Niall Dickson said: "Trainee doctors are the future of health care in this country – the training they receive now will affect the care delivered in every hospital ward and GP surgery for years to come.

"The stakes are high. We simply must get it right."

Private health insurance will cover patients for treatment with a specialist or consultant of their choice, ensuring continuity of care. Compare health insurance policies online now to gain peace of mind about your future healthcare.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
