Increased pressure on the NHS as 1 in 10 Brits can't go a day without alcohol

Published on 18/11/2011

Private health insurer Bupa has revealed that Brits are 41 per cent more likely to drink alcohol than in other countries, and one in ten admit they cannot go a day without drink.

These astonishing figures come from Bupa’s Health Pulse Survey, which questioned more than 13,000 people over 12 countries including Australia, China, Spain, Mexico and the United States.

As well as Brits being more likely to drink alcohol, a third of UK drinkers claim they don’t want to cut back on their drinking. This is more than double the international average, with almost three quarters of international drinkers saying they’d like to try and drink less.

Experts blame the problem on too much of our social life revolving around drinking. Bupa spokesperson Dr Layla McCay said: 'This is a worrying observation which implies that Brits are particularly resistant to change when it comes to drinking habits.

But the potential health consequences of excessive alcohol include cancer, heart disease, stroke, liver disease and diabetes.

Dr McCay said: 'Excessive drinking carries several health risks, including heart disease, stroke, liver disease, many types of cancer and even diabetes.'

Indeed, the UK suffers the highest rate of throat cancer in Europe, double the average rate, according to new analysis by the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF). Britain's high level of alcohol consumption and obesity are blamed for the figures.

Experts have recently predicted that increasing levels of alcohol related hospital admissions will cost the NHS nearly £4bn over the next few years. Charity Alcohol Concern has predicted that rates of alcohol related hospital admissions will rise again to 1.5m every year by 2015, increasing costs to £3.7bn.

With private medical insurance, you will be covered for treatment in a private hospital of your choice at a time of your choice, avoiding the negative effects of alcohol related illnesses on the NHS.

Compare health insurance policies online now to help you avoid the consequences of boozing Britain.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.
