Immigration laws lead to problems for Welsh NHS Trusts

Published on 02/09/2009
As many as 200 doctor vacancies are currently going unfilled in Wales.

The new immigration system in the UK is thought to be behind the problem.

Leanne Wood, a Plaid Cymru assembly member, has suggested that with such a large proportion of doctors coming from outside the EU, there is a concerning shortage of applicants.

"I fear that unless this situation is addressed, services will be deemed unsustainable," she said.

According to WalesOnline, she added: "I find it more than ironic that reactionary calls to curb immigration have lead to a situation where we could end up losing valuable NHS services."

Cardiff and Vale NHS Trust currently has 65 vacancies while Cwm Taf NHS Trust has 20.

Two hospital wards in Swansea have had to be shut as a result of the shortage of doctors.

Just over 40 per cent of doctors in Welsh trusts are from overseas locations, with many coming from India and Pakistan.

No.1 health insurance broker as rated by customers

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
