Hospitals making large profits from car parks

Published on 19/08/2009
Many NHS hospitals across the UK are making huge profits on their car parks, it has been revealed.

A study by Which? has called for an end to unregulated and unclear parking prices in the industry.

Some healthcare trusts were found to make over £1 million a year from their hospital parking fees.

Southampton University Hospitals made the largest sum, a total of £1.38 million in the last three years.

However, Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital enjoyed the biggest profit margin of 534 per cent.

Martyn Hocking, editor of Which?, said: "There are good reasons why hospitals charge for their car parks, but if they're making large profits, there's clearly scope to reduce the amount they charge."

Hospital car parks charge with the intention of deterring non-hospital users from utilising the facilities and to encourage the use of public transport.

However, with the Conservatives claiming this month that the amount of money spent by primary care trusts on administrative tasks is spiralling, it is not clear how much of the profits from car parking charges are put back into patient care and treatment.

Not all hospitals made a profit on their car parks, with Newcastle-upon-Tyne making a £250,000 loss while Hull & East Yorkshire was down by £335,000.

No.1 health insurance broker as rated by customers

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.
