High rates of colorectal surgery failure by NHS

Published on 17/08/2011
One in five patients has to undergo second operations to fix complications arising from bowel surgery carried out by the NHS.

Bowel surgery is one of the commonest operations carried out by the NHS, but a recent audit of 246,469 patients revealed that 15,986 (6.5%) needed further surgery within 28 days because of complications such as post-operative bleeding and infection.*

The audit, published in the British Medical Journal, studied patients who underwent surgery between 2000 and 2008 in 175 English hospital trusts.

There were inexplicable variations between hospitals across the country, ranging from 17% reoperations in some to up to 50% in others. The audit has prompted serious concerns about the performance of certain surgeons.

Patients who have reoperations spend twice as long in hospital, typically 27 days rather than 11. They also have great risk of the disease reoccurring and dying during surgery. 11.9% of patients died following reoperation compared to 2.9%.

People with inflammatory bowel disease such as colitis and Crohn’s were also more likely to need emergency surgery after reoperation.

A Department of Health’s spokesman said “NHS trusts need to get it right first time and prevent avoidable readmissions”.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
