High blood pressure could be caused by poor sleep quality

Published on 31/08/2011
Private medical cover holders may be interested to know that a new study has revealed that there is a link between the quality of your sleep and your risk of high blood pressure, or hypertension.

The study, carried out by the Harvard Medical School and others, followed 784 healthy men with an average age of 75. Over the three and a half year period of the study the men regularly had their blood pressure checked and their sleeping monitored by a machine.

Although the men had no history of hypertension when they started the test, after the three year study, 243 men had developed high blood pressure.

Significantly, it was the men who had the lowest duration of slow-wave sleep who were 81% more likely to develop high blood pressure than those with a longer time in this sleeping phase.

Slow wave sleep makes up about 90 minutes to two hours of a normal night’s rest, and is the deepest phase of sleep. The researchers said that older men who spend less sleep time in slow-wave sleep have an increased risk of developing high blood pressure.

The researchers adjusted these results for age and BMI, and took into account other factors such as location, race, genetic history and smoking history, but the association of high blood pressure with poor quality sleep remained significant.

Dr. Susan Redline, an author of the study and a professor of sleep medicine at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s hospital said that although the study followed only men, she believes the results would also apply to women who fail to get enough deep sleep.

This comes after news that patients with high blood pressure need monitoring devices to reduce misdiagnosis by the NHS.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
