Healthy English diet could prevent cancer deaths across the UK

Published on 03/11/2011

Health conscious people with private medical insurance will be interested to hear that according to a new study, eating an ‘English diet’ could save thousands of lives.

The study, undertaken by academics at Oxford University, looked at deaths from heart disease, stroke, and all ten cancers in all four countries of the UK from 2007 to 2009.

Over the three year period, there were nearly 22,000 excess deaths in total. Scotland had 15,719, Wales 3,723 and Northern Ireland 2,329.

Sponsored by the British Heart Foundation Health Promotion Research Group, the study found that while the English eat just under 2,300 calories a day, elsewhere in the UK the intake is about 100 calories higher.

The data, published in journal BMJ Open, also revealed that people in Scotland and Northern Ireland ate more saturated fat and salt and fewer fruit and vegetables every day than people in England. Peter Scarborough, from the university’s department of public health, said:

"It's not the amount of food that most important in these health differences, it's the type."

Researchers calculated that if death rates from heart disease, stroke and cancer were as low in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales as they were in England, 7,000 fewer people would die a year.

Victoria Taylor, senior dietician at the British Heart Foundation, said: “Saying the rest of the UK should follow England’s lead to cut heart deaths isn’t a fool proof solution; a quarter of English adults are obese and only 30 per cent eat their five-a-day.

Patients with certain private health insurance policies can be rewarded for eating a healthy diet. For example, PruHealth’s Vitality scheme awards points to its customers for living a healthy lifestyle.

PruHealth customers will now collect 10 Nectar points for every £1 spent on healthy food in Sainsbury’s, from a list of over 1,500 products. Customers will also be awarded 1 Vitality point for every £2 spent, in order to promote healthy eating.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
