Health secretary dismisses trans fats ban

Published on 01/07/2010
Those consuming an unhealthy diet will continue to put themselves at risk of serious health conditions after the government ruled out a ban on dangerous trans fats.

Last month health watchdog NICE called for a ban on trans fats, which are one of the leading causes of high cholesterol and subsequent conditions, such as heart attacks and stroke.

However, health secretary Andrew Lansley has rejected advice which suggests they could be responsible for thousands of deaths a year, arguing a ban is unnecessary, the Daily Mail reports.

According to the newspaper, he said it was wrong to tell people what they should and should not eat, adding that Jamie Oliver's attempts to improve UK children's diets had ultimately failed.

Mr Lansley also told the British Medical Association that the government would be unlikely to pass legislation on diet.

People who eat unhealthily and do not perform much exercise may find it harder to find cheap health insurance.
