Health research given £800 million boost

Published on 25/08/2011
Private health insurance holders will be interested to know that over the next five years the UK Government is planning to invest £800 million into clinical research.

The money comes in the shape of 31 awards, which will be used to develop partnerships between clinicians in the NHS and specially selected universities. The scheme aims to turn cutting edge medical research into treatments for clinical environments.

Coordinated by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), the research will be carried out in biomedical centres across the country. Funding for four new Biomedical Research Units, specialising in dementia research, is included in the package.

The applicants from the NHS and university partnerships were assessed by an independent international selection panel. The level of funding rewarded to the partners was determined by the scale and quality of the research.

Priority areas for clinical research include cardiovascular disease, dementia, respiratory disease and musculoskeletal diseases.

UK Chief Medical Officer, Sally Davies said, “By focussing on translational research across a wide range of diseases, the centres and units will help pull new scientific discoveries into benefits for patients.”

Private medical cover holders often have access to cutting edge drugs and treatment not available on the NHS. Compare health insurance policies online with ActiveQuote now to make sure you are covered in the future.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
