Greater awareness could mean better care for Crohn's patients

Published on 12/03/2010
The National Association for Colitis and Crohn's Disease (NACC) has launched a new campaign calling for greater awareness of the chronic bowel conditions.

It is estimated that there are a quarter of a million people with colitis and Crohn's disease living in the UK.

Symptoms include diarrhoea, bleeding, pain, profound fatigue, impaired growth in childhood, and problems with the eyes, skin and joints.

Richard Driscoll, chief executive of the NACC, said: "It can come and go throughout people's lives. Sufferers will have periods when they are well and periods when they are ill but there is no cure.

"We believe that a national register could make a huge difference to the standard of care that the NHS could provide for people."

Although diagnosis can occur at any age, the most common bracket is between ten and 40 years of age. Within five years of diagnosis 70 per cent of patients with Crohn's disease will require surgery, a process that could be sped up with private medical insurance.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
