Govt calls for more detailed alcohol labelling

Published on 16/02/2010
Just 15 per cent of alcoholic drinks provide consumers with enough information about units and health risks, according to the Department of Health.

The government has called for clearer labelling on alcohol to help Brits make more informed choices with regards to drinking on a regular basis.

Commenting on the consultation, a spokesperson for Alcohol Concern said: "It wouldn't have an impact on binge drinking as such but it will allow people to make healthier decisions.

"Hopefully mandatory measures will make sure that people will have the information that they can use to keep themselves safe."

A report from the NHS Confederation and the Royal College of Physicians revealed that treating alcohol-related conditions cost the NHS approximately £2.7 billion in 2006-07, almost double the figure reported in 2001.

The pressure to react to drinkers' urgent and increasing health needs makes it difficult to provide preventative measures. The study recommended out-of-hospital services as a more appropriate and cost-effective form of care.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
