Glaucoma diagnosed with new electronic lens, the Triggerfish Sensor

Published on 07/11/2011

Private hospital the London Eye Hospital is the first hospital in the UK to use the Triggerfish Sensor to diagnose and treat eye condition glaucoma.

The term glaucoma refers to a spectrum of conditions which result in damage to the optic nerve and retina in the eye. The damage cannot be reversed, and it can eventually leave to blindness. Raised eye pressure is a leading risk factor for glaucoma.

The Triggerfish Sensor is a contact lens made of soft silicone with a microchip in it. Within this microchip is an electronic circuit that monitors pressure fluctuations in the eye over a 24 hour period.

Currently, screening for glaucoma happens at an optician check-up, but the test only provides a snapshot reading of the eye. Consultant ophthalmic surgeon Mr Bobby Qureshi, the first British surgeon to use the device, said: “Some people may have normal pressure but in the middle of the night it may peak.”

“That’s the problem because, over years, that peak of high pressure will result in them losing their vision.”

The Triggerfish Sensor monitors the pressures in the eye over 24 hours, even during sleep. An adhesive antenna is attached to the side of the head, and receives wireless readings from the chip in the lens. This data is then recorded, ready to be examined when the lens is removed 24 hours later.

“The Triggerfish will help us diagnose glaucoma earlier, so it will save more people’s sight. This is a significant development in the treatment of glaucoma,” says Mr Qureshi.

The sensor can also be used to evaluate patients already diagnosed with glaucoma to monitor how well controlled the condition is and how effectively they are being treated.

If you are interested in having access to the Triggerfish Sensor, choose a private health insurance policy with optical cover. Some insurers like Bupa give you the opportunity to add dental and optical cover to a comprehensive health insurance policy, helping out with the cost of private treatment.
