Fruit and veg lower risk of heart disease in private health insurance customers

Published on 12/10/2011

Private health insurance customers who are genetically susceptible to heart disease can lower their risk by eating plenty of fruit and raw vegetables, a new study has revealed.

Research has already shown that region 21 on chromosome 9 is linked to heart disease- this marker is thought to be possessed by around 75 per cent of the population. People with two copies of the variant have a 70 per cent increased risk of having a heart attack, whilst those with one copy only have a 30 per cent increase.

US researchers recently carried out one of the biggest diet-gene interaction studies on cardiovascular disease, looking at more than 27,000 people with a variety of ethnic ancestry.

Published in PLoS Medicine journal, the results showed that individuals with the gene variant who ate a healthy diet had the same risk of a heart disease as those without- five or more daily portions of fruit and raw vegetables can weaken the effect of the faulty gene.

Judy O'Sullivan of the British Heart Foundation said:

"The relationship between the two is often very complicated and we don't yet have all the answers, but the message appears to be very simple - eating lots of fruit and vegetables is great news for our heart health."

Lead author, Dr. Ron Do, wrote: “Future research is necessary to understand the mechanism of this interaction, which will shed light on the underlying metabolic processes that the 9p21 gene is involved in."

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.
