Fraud is costing the NHS billions of pounds every year

Published on 14/11/2011

According to a new report, fraud is costing the NHS £3bn a year. With the NHS needing to make efficiency savings of £20bn by 2015, this can only impact negatively on the care of patients without private medical insurance.

The report, published by think-tank 2020Health, warns that the NHS is ‘looking the other way’ as vast amounts of money are lost to fraud.

Julia Manning, of 2020Health, said: ‘Anyone who still claims the NHS does not need to reform should ask themselves whether £3billion a year is an acceptable price to pay for looking the other way.

Examples of fraud in the report include fake time-sheets and invoices, the theft of money from NHS bank accounts and work not done but claimed for.

The worse cases include a dentist convicted of £600,000 fraud after he billed the NHS for treating patients who had died, a manager at King’s College Hospital in London who invented ‘ghost’ employees and gave their pay to four of her friends, and a chief executive over-claimed on his mileage allowance by 55,000 miles.

Matthew Sinclair, of the Tax- Payers’ Alliance, said: ‘£3billion is enough to pay for over 7,000 nurses for a decade or build five hospitals.’

More money is also being lost on the treatment of ‘health tourists’, who are overseas patients not eligible for NHS care.

If the NHS did more the prevent fraud it could make better savings. Julie Manning said: 'Management urgently needs to tackle fraud in an open way that inspires the confidence of the public. The first step to reducing it is to stop being in denial.’

With the NHS needing to make such dramatic efficiency savings, it is patients without private medical insurance who are suffering. With health insurance, you could have access to new drugs too expensive for the NHS and skip the long lists for diagnostic tests and operations.
