Fat around the thighs healthier than on the waist

Published on 05/10/2010
Scientists have discovered why those with fat around the waist may be more at risk of needing a healthcare plan for certain conditions compared to people who tend to store excess weight on the lower body.

Previous research has shown that those with fat around the midriff are more likely to suffer from heart disease, stroke and diabetes, while fat around the lower body - such as the thighs - reduces the risk.

Scientists at the Mayo Clinic, in Rochester, Minnesota, USA, now believe they have found a reason why this is the case.

The team overfed 15 men and 13 women over an eight week period using ice cream shakes, sweets and high-calorie energy drinks, measuring the fat cells in different areas of the body before and after the experiment.

Publishing their results in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, they found significant differences in the way fat accumulates on different parts of the anatomy.

"The cellular mechanisms are different," explained Michael Jensen MD, Mayo Clinic endocrinologist and lead author of the study.

"The accumulation of abdominal fat happens largely by individual cells expanding in size, while with fat gain in the femoral or lower body, it's the number of fat cells that increases. So, different mechanism, different impact."

A recent study by the American Cancer Society in Atlanta, Georgia found that those with waists of 47in or more for men and 42in or more for women are around twice as likely to die over any nine-year period.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.
