Failure of NHS hospitals to follow blood clot guidelines could encourage more people to seek private medical cover

Published on 24/11/2010
More people may be tempted to gain access to private hospitals by taking out private medical cover following news that many NHS hospitals are failing to follow guidelines on health clots.

Most patients admitted to hospital should be assessed to establish if they are at risk of developing a blood clot so they can receive preventive treatment if necessary, under rules imposed almost a year ago.

However, an investigation by the All Party Parliamentary Thrombosis Group found that just 14 hospital trusts in England are even close to meeting these guidelines.

The group submitted freedom of information requests to all NHS hospitals in England and received answers from 140.

This revealed that, in July this year, just over a third of patients admitted to hospital were assessed for their risk of developing a blood clot when it should be 90 per cent, the Daily Telegraph reports.

Professor Beverley Hunt, director of thrombosis charity Lifeblood, told the news provider the statistics are "staggering".

"We are worried that trainee doctors, nurses and pharmacists are not being given the basic mandatory training to diagnose and prevent blood clots, and that is something that must be addressed urgently if we are to reduce the death rate," she said.

"If not prevented, thrombosis is an indiscriminate and devastating killer."

It is estimated that blood clots kill more than 25,000 people a year in the UK, more than the combined deaths attributable to breast cancer, HIV, and road traffic accidents.
