Expert challenges current osteoporosis prescription guidance

Published on 14/12/2009
UK physicians are being limited by the "restrictive guidelines" placed on the prescription of osteoporosis drugs for patients under the age of 75, according to a new report.

Findings published in the journal Therapeutic Advances in Musculoskeletal Disease suggest that the current NICE osteoporosis treatment guidance, which rations and reduces options for postmenopausal women younger than 75, are too limiting.

Cambridge University professor of bone medicine, Juliet Compston, said that the drug alendronate costs less than £20 annually to prescribe, yet is not widely used to treat fractures in the under 75s due to stringent criteria.

When it comes to osteoporosis, she added that "the fundamental principles of consistent use of the evidence base, transparency and equity across disease states have not been observed".

Figures from the National Osteoporosis Society indicate that the bone condition leads to more than 1,000 deaths each month in the UK alone as a result of hip fractures and costs the NHS and government £2.3 billion each year.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
