Exercise recomended for those affected by SAD

Published on 01/10/2009
Women who suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD) have been advised to continue exercising through the cooler months to help alleviate symptoms.

Julie Brealy, health manager at the FitFarms camps, explained that while many people tend to be less active during the winter, regular exercise can benefit SAD sufferers.

She said: "The majority of women start to cut down on their exercise routine and eat more unhealthy food as it gets colder.

"But, with SAD affecting around 7.2 million women in the UK every single year, it's really important to eat regular meals and exercise outdoors."

Evidence suggests that exposure to natural sunlight is an important part of treating SAD.

According to the Seasonal Affective Disorder Association, the condition is common between September and April, in particular during the months of December, January and February.

The NHS states that while you can develop SAD at any age, it is most common in people aged between 18 and 30.
