Education could help cut fertility risk from poor diet and smoking

Published on 02/11/2009
Public interest group Comment on Reproductive Ethics (CORE) has highlighted key issues relating to infertility that are often overlooked.

According to Josephine Quintavalle, director of CORE, basic health education is needed to boost the UK's fertility rates.

She said: "There are some very simple aspects to infertility that we are not addressing. Infertility is very much related to age.

"Healthy eating, pre-conceptual care, there are a lot of issues that nobody ever seems to address when they are discussing infertility."

Smoking, over and under-eating and excessive alcohol consumption can also have an impact on a person's chances of conception.

In January this year, the British Fertility Society announced the development of new guidelines for medical and laboratory screening procedures for sperm, egg and embryo donors.

Figures show that in 2006, 2,106 women in the UK received treatment with donor sperm, 622 with donor eggs and 98 with donor embryos.
