Eating high fibre foods lower risk of bowel cancer

Published on 11/11/2011

A new study in the British Medical Journal has shown that eating fibre and whole grains significantly reduce the risk of developing bowel cancer. People with private health insurance could also gain rewards on their policy for eating high fibre foods like brown rice and cereals.

Researchers from Imperial College London analysed 25 previous studies, made up of data provided by almost 2 million people.

Researchers found that for every 10g a day increase in fibre intake there is a 10% drop in the risk of bowel cancer, and adding an additional 90g a day (three servings) of whole grains led to a 20% reduction in the risk.

Dagfinn Aune, lead study author and research associate in the department of epidemiology and biostatistics at Imperial College London, said their analysis found a linear association between dietary fibre and colorectal cancer.

However, the study also found that there was no evidence that fibre in fruit and vegetables played a part in reducing risk.

Cancer charities have now called for more detailed research on the quantity and type of fibre to eat. Mark Flannagan, chief executive of Beating Bowel Cancer, said the research supported the charity's current advice.

"These results support what we already know about the link between dietary fibre and a reduced risk of bowel cancer, although more work is needed to clarify the quantity and types of fibre we should be eating to reduce risk.

Some health insurers offer reward schemes for living a healthy lifestyle. PruHealth’s Vitality scheme rewards private medical insurance customers for eating healthily, exercising regularly and not smoking. PruHealth customers will now collect 10 Nectar points for every £1 spent on healthy food in Sainsbury’s, from a list of over 1,500 products.
