Eating curry could help private medical cover holders with tendonitis

Published on 11/08/2011

Curcumin, a spice commonly found in curry, could soon be appearing in private healthcare units to help treat patients with tendonitis.

A global group of scientists have discovered that curcumin, the substance which gives turmeric its hallmark yellow colouring, can work to supress the biological mechanisms that cause inflammation in tendon conditions.

Dr Ali Mobasheri, one of the leading researchers in the study, said: "We believe that it may present researchers a significant new lead in the treatment of these painful ailments by means of nutrition.”

Tendonitis is a swelling of a tendon, usually affecting the knees, wrists and shoulders. The condition can be caused through an injury or through overuse of the joint, and is often experienced by office workers using a computer all day.

Current treatment consists mainly of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDS) like aspirin or ibuprofen, which can only alleviate the pain and lesson the inflammation. Severe tendon injuries may be managed by steroid shots. However, NSAIDS and steroids often have undesirable side effects.

“Our study isn't suggesting that curry, turmeric or curcumin are cures for inflammatory conditions” Dr Mobasheri said. “Further research into curcumin, and chemically-modified versions of it, should be the subject of future investigations and complementary therapies aimed at reducing the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.”

With life expectancy soaring, the worldwide occurrence of tendonitis is on the rise. Unfortunately, experts say that it is difficult to get a big enough dose to remedy the medical problem from a curry, since 100g of curry powder has to be eaten to deliver a 3.6g clinical dose.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.
