Richard Theo, MD of ActiveQuote Ltd. has been named Entrepreneur of the Year at the inaugural Cardiff Business Awards. ActiveQuote Ltd. was also shortlisted for the Financial & Professional Services Business of the Year.
Backed by organisations including Natwest, City of Cardiff Council and the Cardiff Business Club, the Cardiff Business Awards were set up to celebrate the successes of businesses and entrepreneurs based in the capital.
A total of 48 finalists from a wide range of sectors were shortlisted across 14 categories including SME of the year, Start Up Business of the year and Technology and Innovation business of the year.
Richard was up against Andrew Cooksley of ACT, Steve Dimmick of Dimmick’s and Andrea Callanan of Sing and Inspire. The winners were announced at a glittering ceremony at Cardiff City Hall on Friday night.
Winners were selected by a judging panel, which included Professor Dylan Jones-Evans, founder of the Wales Fast Growth 50 awards, Ken Poole, Head of Economic Development at City of Cardiff Council and representatives of award sponsors.
Richard Theo is an entrepreneur with a passion and enthusiasm for technology that has driven him to establish and grow a string of successful technology-based start-up companies, including ActiveQuote, SoftSwift and Avantis Systems Ltd. Richard was also founder of Zushi, Wales’s first conveyor belt-based sushi restaurant.

Highly commended by the judges were Nata & Co, TB Davies and Fareshare Cymru. Henry Engelhardt, Chief Executive of Admiral, also received a special judges award for his contribution to the economy in Cardiff.
