'Distressing' NHS survey to encourage people to take out private medical cover?

Published on 10/11/2010
The results of a new survey into the effects of NHS cost cutting could encourage more people to take out private medical cover.

Public services union Unison has said that the government is turning the clock back on health services to the 80s and early 90s after carrying out a poll of 8,000 NHS staff.

Almost a third of those questioned said that NHS attempts to meet the government's required £20 billion of savings had led to a decrease in the quality of patient care.

Some 80 per cent reported an increase in workload, 54 per cent said they are coping with an increased number of patients and 59 per cent of respondents report a reduction in the number of staff employed.

Karen Jennings, Unison head of health, said: "What is truly distressing is that that the survey clearly shows how spending cuts are already threatening to damage the quality of patient care.

"The government are turning back the clock and dragging the country back to the dark days of the 80s and early 90s when the NHS was starved of money.

"Back then, patients who could afford it, paid up to avoid being at the end of a very long waiting list or being treated in poorly maintained hospitals."

A recent report from the London School of Economic' Centre for Economic Progress found that, across seven developed nations including the UK, private hospitals were better managed than their state-funded counterparts.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
