Diagnostic test 'extremely useful' for predicting preterm births

Published on 10/12/2009
Less than half of women with threatened preterm labour deliver when they present at hospital, experts say.

According to a new report from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, many antenatal admissions are subjected to unnecessary interventions.

However, a diagnostic test has been developed but is not commonly used in all maternity units despite being relatively cheap and easy to perform.

Dr Anna David, consultant obstetrician at the Institute for Women's Health, UCL, said: "We know it's a very good test for telling people that they are not going to go into labour.

"It's been used in some countries abroad like in North America and Australia, and it really needs to be rolled out across the UK to help the hospitals that see the most at risk women."

Worldwide the preterm birth rate is estimated at 9.6 per cent - about 12.9 million babies, the White Paper reported.

Experts advise pregnant women to stop smoking as scientific research proves they are at higher risk of delivering preterm.

No.1 health insurance broker as rated by customers

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.
