Dementia treatment to be reviewed by government

Published on 16/11/2009
Almost two-thirds of people living with dementia in the UK are unnecessarily being prescribed anti-psychotic drugs.

That is according to a review from King's College London, which called for action to be taken to cut the use of such medication in dementia cases.

In response, Harriet Millward, deputy chief executive of the Alzheimer's Research Trust, said: "The evidence has been mounting for some time that these drugs have been overprescribed. They aren't helping the vast majority of people.

"This is a stopgap and we need to develop new treatments for people with dementia."

The government has committed to reducing the number of dementia sufferers on the drugs by two thirds by 2012.

According to the Alzheimer's Society, there are currently 700,000 people living with dementia in the UK, with 64 per cent of people in care homes having some form of the condition.

No.1 health insurance broker as rated by customers

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
