Dementia care needs to improve, experts say

Published on 06/11/2009
The quality of care for people living with Alzheimer's in the UK has not seen any real improvement in recent times.

Robin Felton, from the Birmingham branch of the Alzheimer's Society, said that he sees the "same poor practice and care" today that he witnessed 15 years ago.

He commented: "One area that falls down is care in the community for people, because we tend to have generic support from care agencies but they are not specialists in dementia care.

"They just create a task focussed system [which is] partly the fault of the way that we commission care."

Mr Felton called for better dementia care training at a local level in order to improve the existing quality of care homes and agencies nationwide.

This week, the Department of Health reported that scientists working in the field of dementia research will get more support to help them access funding in future.

Care Services Minister Phil Hope announced that this move will drive forward projects investigating causes, cures and care of people with the illness.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
