Crucial brain scan delay for NHS stroke patients

A new study has revealed that only 33 per cent of stroke victims receive a brain scan from the NHS within an hour.

A National Audit carried out by Royal College of Physicians reported that only 53% of patients were seen by nurses and a therapist within 24 hours after a stroke. Additionally, only half of eligible stroke victims were given a clot preventing drug.*

The data, collected by The Stroke Improvement National Audit Programme (SINAP) for the first quarter of 2011-12, also showed that 45% of people were not admitted to a dedicated stroke unit within 4 hours.

The report also indicated that there are wide variations within hospitals. Dr Lorna Layward from The Stroke Association said: “The guidelines and expectations are set out for stroke care but unfortunately some hospitals are falling short.”

The report by the Royal College of Physicians showed that stroke victims in the South West have to wait for much longer than the national average to see specialist staff. Stroke patients in the Royal Hospital Cornwall waited up to 19 hours, whilst some patients in Derriford Hospital in Plymouth waited for an unacceptable 41 hours.

Dr Lorna Layward said: "We urge all hospitals that provide stroke care to ensure their data is submitted to this audit, so that we can gather the whole national perspective and help to drive standards of care up so that more people can survive their stroke and make a good recovery.”
