CQC: More needs to be done to limit CVD deaths

Published on 18/09/2009
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has called for renewed effort to help reduce the growing number of cardiovascular-related deaths in the UK.

According to the latest figures, cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the nation's biggest killer, with one in three deaths in England resulting from the illness - the highest rate in Europe.

CQC chair Barbara Young said: "This disease is likely to touch every single one of us at some point in our lives. It is good news that the number of deaths has been driven down, but resting on those laurels is really not an option."

In response to the CVD statistics, the CQC has issued a report urging GP practices to improve primary care services across the country, as research shows the standard of care provided by NHS varies in relation to area.

Statistics show that people in more affluent parts of the UK can live up to 23 years longer than their poorer neighbours.

Ms Young added: "We cannot accept that more people die here prematurely from CVD than in other countries. And we cannot rest while health inequalities exist on the scale they do."

Despite England's high death rate from cardiovascular disease, the government has managed to meet its target for next year of cutting total deaths among the under 75s by at least 40 per cent.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
