Could calorie counting in restaurants tackle obesity?

Published on 10/08/2010
Pubs and restaurants could be forced to publish calorie information on their menu items in a bid to tackle the nation's obesity crisis.

Health secretary Andrew Lansley proposed implementing the rule so that the public are aware of what they are eating.

Some restaurants have been taking part in a trial of the scheme, but so far only one chain, the Real Greek, has successfully displayed calorie counts on each item of food and drink.

A spokesperson from the British Hospitality Association commented that if the scheme were to go ahead, it must be delivered in all sectors and contain all business costs.

"Allocating calories to dishes on menus can be complex and technically difficult and any scheme will bring additional costs such as menu reprinting if an ingredient changes halfway through the menu cycle," he said.

However, the organisation added that some companies might want to include calorie information as it suits their business model.

People with a health insurance plan could be interested in the scheme to help make healthy choices while dining out.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
