Complementary medicine experts call for regulated status

Published on 03/12/2009
The Prince's Foundation for Integrated Health has warned that herbal medicine patients could be at risk if the government fails to introduce statutory regulation of herbalists and acupuncturists.

Clive Teal, registrar for the British Register of Complementary Practitioners, part of the Institute for Complementary and Natural Medicine (ICNM), suggested that the government has held up the statutory regulation of herbal medicine.

He commented: "[The regulation] is to police the practitioners to ensure they meet recognised standards of competence and restrict the practise of those who do not meet them.

"This can only be for the benefit of the public who can then be assured of qualified practitioners."

An EU Directive soon to be introduced will see herbalists and providers of traditional Chinese medicine be banned from using manufactured or pre-prepared treatments.

The use of alternative therapies has increased in popularity in recent years, with many Brits turning to natural treatments in conjunction with conventional medicines.

A great service from the initial call, to finalising the agreement. I would highly recommend to my family and friends.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
