Childhood obesity caused by diet rather than inactivity, study shows

Published on 09/07/2010
Increasing physical activity will not help tackle obesity in children, it has been claimed.

A new study has shown that a lack of exercise is the result of being overweight, rather than its cause.

As such, it is a child's diet that is primarily responsible in cases of obesity.

The researchers from the EarlyBird Diabetes Trust, based at the Peninsula Medical School in Plymouth, studied a group of more than 200 children in the city over three years, monitoring their fat and exercise levels at regular intervals.

Their results, published in the Archives of Disease in Childhood, found that body fat levels affected levels of physical activity.

However, varying the amount of physical activity the children engaged in did not lead to any changes in fatness.

"Physical inactivity appears to be the result of fatness rather than its cause. This reverse causality may explain why attempts to tackle childhood obesity by promoting physical activity have been largely unsuccessful," the report concluded.

This week it was revealed that the number of children eating Jamie Oliver-inspired healthy school lunches has risen by 300,000 in the last year.
