Charity calls for more support for dementia patients

Published on 02/10/2009
Greater priority should be given to dementia research because of the condition's social and economic impact in the UK, it has been said.

Andrew Scheuber, spokesperson for the Alzheimer's Research Trust, said that while the government is currently focusing on the later stages of the degenerative condition, more attention needs to be given earlier, at the point of diagnosis.

"There is still a stigma attached to dementia," he claimed. "We should be looking at the early stages, making sure that once someone is diagnosed with dementia there is a clear pathway for treatment."

His comments follow a new report from Nuffield Council on Bioethics, which highlighted the ethical dilemmas faced by dementia patients and their carers on a daily basis.

The council called for more ongoing support for sufferers and their families from both social and health services.

Figures from the Alzheimer's Research Trust show that 700,000 people in the UK have dementia and this is forecast to double within a generation.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
