Cancer patients missing out on free car parks

Published on 09/09/2009
Despite government advice recommending it, more than half of cancer patients are not getting free or discounted hospital car parking.

That is the finding of a study by Macmillan Cancer Support, which discovered that although guidelines urge hospitals to give free parking to the long-term ill, the rules are not compulsory.

Even those public trusts that do offer parking concessions are not publicising them particularly well, with less than a quarter getting free parking and 12 per cent not knowing that they could while undertaking therapy.

Mike Hobday, head of policy at the charity, said: "The entire hospital parking system is an appalling, disjointed mess, which causes cancer patients unnecessary financial hardship and stress.

"It's clear that the government's guidance isn't working and it's time to end the confusion and scrap this tax on illness for cancer patients in England once and for all."

During the course of the average cancer treatment, 53 trips to hospital are made, with an average person spending £325 on parking over the course of their treatment.

Car parking charges have been a hot issue of late and recently a study by Which? found that some healthcare trusts were making as much as £1.3 million from their parking fees.

No.1 health insurance broker as rated by customers

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
