Cancer on the rise, but preventable by healthy lifestyle

Published on 08/09/2011

Whilst health insurance policy holders may have access to cancer treatment not available on the NHS, the World Research Cancer Fund has suggested that 80,000 fewer Brits could be diagnosed with cancer if they ate healthy, exercised and lost weight.

It has been revealed by the WRCF that the number of cancer cases has increased worldwide by a fifth in the last decade to 12 million new cases a year.

This is more than 4 times the annual number of HIV infections across the globe. Now, cancer, heart disease and diabetes are some of the biggest health challenges faced across the world.

It is no surprise that 2.8 million cancer cases are linked to poor diet, lack of exercise and obesity. With international researchers warning that 26 million Brits will be clinically obese by 2030, the number of cancers is predicted to rise again over the next decade.

The most common cancers in the UK are breast, lung and bowel. The Government has been criticised by health experts for cutting spending on the Change4Life campaign.

Dr Kate Allen, director of science and communications, says:

“Addressing smoking, obesity, physical inactivity and diet will not just prevent cancer. It will also prevent heart disease, diabetes and respiratory disease.”

Illnesses like cancer will often be covered by a comprehensive health insurance policy. Some health insurers also offer rewards for leading a healthy lifestyle. ‘Vitality’ is core to PruHealth’s Healthcare plans, a scheme which rewards things like walking, going to the gym, eating healthily or not smoking.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
