Call to ban chemical found in baby bottles over fears it may cause cancer

Published on 21/06/2010
A leading academic has called for a ban on a chemical commonly found in baby bottles that may be linked to breast cancer.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is used to make plastic shatterproof and is often found in everyday items such as CD cases, plastic knives and forks, as well as in baby bottles.

However, amid growing fears that the chemical can increase the risk of developing breast cancer in later life, Professor Ana Soto, an expert in cancer development at Ulster University, has said the use of BPA should be made illegal.

"I would call for a banning of the use of BPA giving the growing evidence and increasing concerns that research has shown," she said.

Professor Soto's own research carried out on rats has suggested a link between exposure to BPA during the foetal and neonatal stages and an increased chance of developing breast cancer later in life.

"The foetal and neonatal life are crucial for a child's development and parents should consider the advantage of using BPA-free products," Professor Soto commented.

A research team in Copenhagen is currently investigating whether a link can be established between BPA and a growing number of girls reaching puberty before the age of ten.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.
