Bupa survey exposes cancer preventing superfood myths

Published on 20/10/2011

One in ten people mistakenly believe that ‘superfoods’ can prevent cancer, according to private health insurance provider Bupa.

New research commissioned by Bupa has revealed that despite there being no medical evidence in support of the claim, 11 per cent of Brits think that eating ‘superfoods’ will help prevent developing cancer.

The survey, carried out by YouGov, also discovered that 38 per cent of people think that there are health benefits to eating ‘superfoods’ like almonds, acai berries, black rice, pomegranate juice and plain popcorn. Some people even believe that eating these foods is better than eating a balanced diet.

Bupa has warned that whilst these foods can be good for you, the label ‘superfoods’ gives people false expectation of their benefits. Of those questioned that where familiar with the term ‘superfood’, 61 per admitted purchasing a product because it had a 'superfood' label.

Christina Merryfield, Lead Dietician at Bupa's Cromwell Hospital, said:

"The term 'superfood' is misleading as there is no clear definition and many of the supposed health claims are vague or not fully substantiated.

"Some so-called 'superfoods' like pomegranate juice and almonds can be good for you as part of a balanced diet, but giving them such a heroic sounding name confuses the public and can cause worse diet choices as people mistakenly believe they can 'undo' the damage caused by unhealthy foods".

Research has shown that eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly and not smoking is the best form of cancer prevention. Some health insurers even offer schemes in which customers are rewarded for living a healthy lifestyle, like PruHealth.
